Dear Honorable Senator [Name],
My name is [your name],I am a resident and regular voter in [county name]. I am writing to express my concern about Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee’s incredibly racist remarks and ask you to push the Senate to register its disapproval.
In a Twitter message,Sen. Blackburn said: “China has a 5,000 year history of cheating and stealing. Some things will never change…” This text was reported by the media:https://twitter.com/MarshaBlackburn/status/1334510812552163328
Sen. Blackburn said: “China has a 5,000 year history of cheating and stealing. Some things will never change…” This text was reported by the media.
As a Chinese American, I am deeply offended by Blackburn’s baseless attack on my heritage. More importantly, as an American, I am gravely disturbed by the damage such racist speech will bring to our country when it is already facing the threat of an unprecedented pandemic and a tumultuous election.
We all know Chinese civilization is one of the few world civilizations with the longest history. It has produced great treasures in philosophy, religion, and literature for humanity. To label it as “cheating and stealing” only reveals the extreme ignorance of the author. Significant influences from the Chinese civilization extend to other East-Asian countries; many of them are our allies. People with Chinese heritage have spread all over the world. Sen. Blackburn’s attack on Chinese civilization is offensive to all these countries, regions, and people. It drives a wedge between the U.S. and its allies when we are in dire need of solidarity and cooperation.
The governments of the U.S. and the PRC have strong disagreements and conflicts on many issues. As a U.S. citizen, my loyalty is undoubtedly on the U.S. side. However, we have never ridiculed our adversary’s civilization as “cheating and stealing” in history because we know that civilizations should tolerate and learn from each other no matter where the government’s stand is. This sense of openness and inclusiveness is one of the keystone values that make America stronger. Sen. Blackburn’s remarks signal her disdain and abandonment of American values.
There are over 5 million Chinese Americans in the U.S.. At this challenging time of COVID-19 and the U.S.-China standoffs, Chinese Americans already face the mistrust and resentment fanned by politicians, including President Trump. Sen. Blackburn’s bigoted attack on Chinese civilization adds fuel to the fire, further poisoning the political atmosphere that our fellow citizens have to endure.
Dear Senator, Sen. Blackburn’s baseless and irresponsible Twitter remarks hurt American national interest globally, threaten American core values, and incite hatred among American communities. Such speeches have no place in our public discourse. Therefore, I respectfully request that you, as my representative, express your disapproval at a Senate forum and seek reprimanding actions against Sen. Blackburn with your colleagues.
Thank you for your attention to the matter.

Re: Senator Blackburn’s Racist Tweet Against All People of Chinese Descent
Dear Senator/Congressman/Congresswoman xxx,
I am writing to bring to your attention a recent twitter storm ignited by your colleague, Senator Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee. On December 3, 2020, she tweeted the following:
I learned about this story about a week ago. Today (December 11th, 2020), the tweet is still hanging on Senator Blackburn’s account as if it were a Badge of Honor.
Senator Blackburn’s tweet overtly declares all people of Chinese descent and their ancestors as criminals. This bold claim implicates millions of Chinese Americans, and its indictment reaches back literally to the time of legendary HuangDi and YanDi, which, by the way, even historians are not sure should belong to the recorded history of China. How is such a statement any different from the lies perpetuated by the likes of Holy Inquisition and Nazis about Jews? One need look no further than Holocaust to understand spreading such lies about an entire people is not only grievously wrong but also extremely dangerous.
I do not know what had triggered Senator Blackburn to give such a disturbingly unhinged hate speech on a country about whose history she apparently knows nothing. Whatever her motives were, what she did was simply unacceptable for any responsible member of a civilized society. Kindergarteners in this country are taught to avoid abusive languages and to treat others the way they want to be treated themselves. Yet, Senator Blackburn did not seem to understand these basic social norms also apply to her. Most elementary school kids would learn to separate facts from opinions. Yet, Senator Blackburn seemed to have never bothered to check any facts before publicly insulting a supra-ethnic group that counts more than 1.5 billion living members around the world, including the wife of the Senate Majority Leader of her own party, Secretary Elaine Chao.
Yes, racist and xenophobic rants fueled by prejudice and misinformation are rampaging like wild fire on social media these days, but to see one given by a member of the US Congress—presumably the greatest legislation body that the world has ever known—is shocking, concerning, and heart-breaking. How could we, as a democracy that is held as the beacon of hope for humanity, allow our public discourse to sink to this level of incivility? How could you, an honorable member of this great institution, tolerate the behavior of Senator Blackburn, without feeling deeply saddened and ashamed?
I hereby respectfully request that you consider a motion to take necessary congressional actions that (i) compel Senator Blackburn to immediately delete the tweet and issue a formal apology to all people of Chinese descent on Twitter and on her official senatorial website; and (ii) pass a resolution to denounce and censure Senator Blackburn for giving this disgraceful hate speech.
Thanks for taking the time to read this letter and consider my request. I look forward to the feedbacks and hopefully the actions.
Sincerely yours,
[Your Name]
