APAPA: Harvard Admissions Policy Statement

SACRAMENTO,CA-APAPA

Harvard Admissions Policy Statement

March 26, 2015

SACRAMENTO, CA – As an Asian and Pacific Islander American organization with diverse members from all backgrounds, APAPA opposes discrimination in any shape or form, but we fully embrace the concept of diversity.

The admission policy of Harvard University is troubling because it appears that the policy is discriminatory toward certain Asian and Pacific Islander American groups. Specifically, it appears that the bars are set higher for Chinese Americans.

APAPA can understand and accept admission policies designed to promote diversity. APAPA further acknowledges the educational value of a diverse learning environment for all students. However, the parameters for admission must be clearly defined, delineated and open, without the use of a quota system for any specific group. Additionally, any diversity policies should benefit all under-represented ethnic groups, including certain Asian and Pacific Islander Americans.

Our country derives her strength through diversity by accepting immigrants from all corners of the world. Simultaneously, we are at our worst when we discriminate. There is a fine line separating embracing diversity and discrimination against admission of ethnic groups who traditionally perform at a higher level in academics.

We urge Harvard and all universities to clearly explain their admission policies and publish relevant data. Public review and scrutiny of policy and outcome can alleviate mistrust and fear of racial discrimination among certain groups. APAPA welcomes the opportunity to work with you to formulate a fair and open admission process to achieve your educational goals, including diversity, without suspicion of racial quota.

APAPA is a non-profit, non-partisan and grassroots organization. Its mission is to promote the advancement of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Americans through education, active participation, and leadership in civic and public affairs.
