A Draft Letter to Sponsors & Advertisers of Bob Beckel’s ‘The Five’ Program

On Thursday, July 10, 2014 Fox news host Bob Beckel set off another firestorm by using a racial slur in a rant about China and Chinese people on “The Five”, a television program sponsored by your company.

“The Chinese are the single biggest threat to the national security of the U.S.,” Mr. Beckel said. “They have been, they will be and they can wait, they’re very patient. Do you know what we just did? As usual, we bring them over here and we teach a bunch of Chinamen — er, Chinese people — how to do computers and then they go back to China and hack into us.”

After much initial protest, on the following Monday, July 14, 2014 Beckel sort of apologized for his use of the term “Chinamen” but he does not apologize for things “I’ve said about China and won’t go into the litany of it now…”

Evidently, this is not the first time he used the term “Chinamen”, he has used that term before. There was the time he said that his eyes looked “Oriental” after he went swimming. The website BuzzFeed politics listed six worst derogatory cultural observations made by Bob Beckel (http://www.buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczynski/the-6-worst-cultural-observations-made-by-fox-news-host-bob).

His statement on July 10 tainted all Chinese people (loyal American citizens or not) by insinuating that after we learned computer skills in America we then go back to China to hack into American businesses and government.

Mr. Ted Lieu, a Chinese American Democrat California Senator and a US Congressional candidate called Beckel remarks ‘racist’ and ‘xenophobic’. Ted observed “I am one of those ‘Chinamen’ with ‘Oriental’ eyes that immigrated to America and majored in computer science. I also served on active duty in the United States Air Force and continue to serve my country in the Reserves”….. “We should all be alarmed by the racist, xenophobic comments by Bob Beckel. His comments have no place in America. He must resign immediately.” We concur with Ted and we join California Congressman Mike Honda in asking Fox news to fire Bob Beckel immediately.

As a responsible company doing business in the international arena and as a sponsor of the Fox news “The Five” program, we are holding your organization responsible in ensuring Chinese and other ethnic groups are not singled out for insensitive and racially charged stereotypical remarks such as those repeatedly made by Mr. Beckel.

Please exercise your duties and rights to ensure that diversity and its values are not compromised by any broadcast program your company sponsor.

Sincerely,
